Writing is indeed an art. Those who can write well are blessed, because the skill often comes in handy both for the entertainment of others and the entertainment of oneself. Writing is used in journaling, story-telling, letterwriting, and so much more!
Fortunately, writing is a skill you can develop and perfect. I constantly try to make myself a better writer, and have found that I could do just that by doing the following:

1. Read!
To become a great writer, it is necessary that you read. By reading, you learn the techniques of those who HAVE mastered the written word, and perhaps can learn from these great writers. Moreover, reading adds to your vocabulary, and makes you a generally better speaker. These are some books I suggest:
*The Giver
*The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
*The Whipping Boy
*Little Women
*The Diary of Anne Frank
*Harry Potter books
*When the Legends Die
*Heartlight
*Freak the Mighty
*The Outsiders
*Jacob Have I Loved
*Little Lord Fauntlorey
The Prisoner of Zenda
Anne of Green Gables Series
Stephen King's On Writing
The Green Mile

Some Authors I Suggest:
*Lois Lowry
*Judy Blume
*Louisa May Alcott
*Edgar Alan Poe
*Avi
*Katherine Patterson

2. Keep a Journal
Although I will admit that I am not the most faithful journaler, I must say that the records that I do keep I enjoy reading later, and feel good while making. Keeping a journal is good practice for a writer, and makes for the preservation of great memories. (Memories can make for great books!)

3. Submit
It is vital that you submit your writing if you want to be a writer. Sometimes even the best writers need criticism. Don't be afraid of it. Listening to the ideas of others can really help your writing. However, make sure that the places you submit to would at least be somewhat interested in what you are submitting. For example, don't submit a one-page poem to a tabloid magazine. You can start by submitting your writing to me if you want to be published, and have quality stuff.

4. Put your ideas down ASAP
Later you may not remember that PERFECT story plot or whatever your idea is. No idea should be dismissed.

5. Revise!

6. Be realistic.
Don't expect a Pullizer first time you put pen to paper.

7. Be original.
Use that noggin and come up with fresh ideas. Everybody likes an interesting story. A good writer is NOT a copy-cat.

8. Have fun!
Writing is something that's fun. Enjoy it!
